Not long after being started in 1935 by Foy E. Wallace, Jr., the Gospel Guardian ceased publication before later coming back as the Bible Banner. However, in 1949 the Gospel Guardian returned with Fanning Yater Tant serving as editor, Roy E. Cogdill as publisher, and a host of writers contributing from around the country.
The policy of the journal, in the words of the editor was to be “set for the defense of the church” as the writers would “fight for the right” through its pages. He explained in the first issue: “Our unswerving policy is ‘let the truth be taught on every issue, everywhere, all the time.’ That is the only safe course.” Those involved with the journal were opposed to the “institutional” practices that were becoming popular at that time. Yet, as Tant explained, “we are not ‘anti’ anything except ‘anti-wrong.'” In his words, “This journal is dedicated to a clean, militant, aggressive, and uncompromising fight ‘in defense of the church against all errors and innovations.'”
