Description
In the nineteenth century, among those who had made the “restoration plea,” division occurred over the Missionary Society. This resulted in two distinct groups: the Christian Church and the churches of Christ.
Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, the churches of Christ in the United States divided over the issue of institutionalism, as brethren on the two sides held differing views concerning the organization, work, and mission of the church. In many ways, this division reflected the same issues as the one over the Missionary Society.
It is important to learn from the past. The author of this booklet saw his father’s (Yater Tant, 1908-1997) direct involvement in this controversy. In summarizing the history of this division (as well as the division of the nineteenth century), he shares his wisdom and arguments from the Scriptures to help the present generation understand what this controversy was about, in the hopes of preventing the same cycle of apostasy and division from repeating.
