Plain Talk began in January 1964 as a publication of the Oaks-West church of Christ in Burnet, Texas. Robert F. Turner served as the editor and did much of the writing throughout its publication. The editor stated that the publication began as “an effort to promote better attitudes among brethren. We hoped to achieve this, not by ‘sugar-talk’ or by hiding our true convictions, but by fair open, objective discussion of issues common among brethren.” The articles dealt with various Bible topics – including the controversial issues of the day – in short, easy-to-read articles that reflected the name of the journal – Plain Talk.
