Description
Robert Milligan (1814-1875) was born in Ireland and was brought to the United States by his parents in 1818. After becoming a member of the Presbyterian Church, where his father was an elder, he learned the truth and, in 1838, was baptized into Christ by Elder John Irvin of the church of Christ at Cane Ridge. During his life, he labored as a professor at Bethany College and served as co-editor of the Millennial Harbinger. Afterward, he served as president of Kentucky University and was the head of the College of the Bible at that institution.
A Brief Treatise on Prayer originally appeared as a series of articles published in the Millennial Harbinger. The articles were well-received by readers, which created a demand to publish them in a single booklet. Alexander Campbell wrote to Milligan and endorsed his work: “I have just carefully re-read your seven articles on Prayer, and I can conscientiously and most cordially commend them to all our brethren and the reading and inquisitive public, who are desirous of knowing their duty and privilege in the use and enjoyment of prayer, personal and social.”
This updated edition also includes Milligan’s writing on prayer from his book, Scheme of Redemption, as well as his comments on Hebrews 4:14-16 from his commentary on Hebrews.
