Description
James Madison Mathes (1808-1892) was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and his family later moved to Indiana. As he grew up under the influence of Calvinism, he became troubled that he could not “get religion.” Eventually, he resolved to dismiss the religious teaching he had previously held to and simply read the Scriptures to learn what they said. This led him to be immersed for the remission of sins. Later, he joined the ministry, preaching the gospel and debating denominational pastors. Yet he did his greatest work as editor of The Christian Record, published from 1843 to 1859.
A Record of Christian Union and Truth is a collection of articles written by Mathes and published in his paper, The Christian Record. It contains material on Christian union, Universalism, the church, and more. It also includes articles discussing some of his travels to preach the gospel.
