The Primitive Christian was a monthly magazine whose purpose was to call the attention of men back to the inspired word of God. It was edited by Silas E. Shepard (1801-1877) and published in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. Echoing the Restoration plea, Shepard hoped that by returning to the facts of the Gospel and obedience to its commands, the friends of the Lord Jesus could unite. Much of the material in this journal was written by the editor but also includes articles, questions, correspondence, and critiques submitted by others.

At the start of the second volume, the paper merged with William Hunter’s The Christian Investigator and became The Primitive Christian and Investigator.
